Das Geräusch am Anfang der CD werden nicht mehr viele kennen. Es ist das Öffnen eines Kassettendecks, das Einschieben und Starten der Kassette. Das ist dann aber auch alles, was an Retro erinnert. Denn Jason Lindner, Hauptmann und Keyboarder von Now Vs.Now, ist alles andere als rückwärtsgewandt – auch wenn er sich schon mal Sounds bedient, die etwa Scritti Politti in den 80ern zu Soundsgebirgen entfalteten. Oder Pink Floyd Ende der 70er-Jahre. Die Verwendung dieser kommt bei Lindner aber eher Zitaten gleich, denn der Soundästhet, der auch schon die Tasten auf David Bowies letztem Werk und vor allem auf dem majestätischen Schwanengesang „Blackstar“ bediente, sieht sich als Erneuerer.

Jason Lindner vermischt elektronische Musik mit Jazz, Funk, Soul, mit Synth-Pop und Elektro-R & B. Das macht die Musik interessant, herausfordernd und meistens sogar ziemlich groovig – mitunter aber leider auch zu beliebig. Da fehlt es bisweilen an Ecken und Kanten, an echten Spannungsbögen. Aber das gehört zum Konzept dieses Albums. Dazu gleich mehr. Das beste Stück des Albums ist „Dichotomy“, ein an orientalischen Harmonien orientiertes Werk, das genau die Forderungen nach Abwechslung erfüllt und noch dazu die Ästhetik des Sounds durch schräge Momente aufbricht. Auch das ist genau an dieser Stelle so gewollt.
Konzept eines philosophischen Künstlers
Was das Album trotz einiger Schwächen dennoch zu einem bedeutenden Werk macht, ist das Konzept des philosophischen Künstlers (Genau das ist Lindner!): Mit „The Buffering Cocoon“ hat Lindner musikalische Ideen aufgeschrieben, wenn Sie so wollen, sind es Klangessays, die sich mit Zukunftsfragen beschäftigen. Die Themen der einzelnen Tracks sind wie einzelne Kapitel eines Buches miteinander verbunden, und ihr musikalischer Ausdruck ist aufeinander aufgebaut. Dadurch bedient Lindner keine althergebrachten Hörgewohnheiten, die Musik ist auf eigenartige Weise nüchtern, da sind „Kapitel“ der knappen Worte, da wird mal ausgeholt und Bezüge zu anderen Kulturen und Musikepochen geschaffen. Das Geräusch der startenden Kassette deutet an, dass hier eine Musik zusammengestellt ist, die man durchhören muss. Sie beginnen ja ein Buch auch nicht erst bei Kapitel 4 zu lesen!
Lindner fordert uns heraus, unsere Hörgewohnheiten aufzugeben und damit auch unsere Denkmuster zu überdenken. Ein interessanter Ansatz!
Neben der Band Now Vs Now, in der auch Bassist Panagiotis Andreou und Schlagzeuger Justin Tyson spielen, ist Lindner Sounddesigner, Komponist, Arrangeur und Produzent. Lindner tourt derzeit mit dem Saxophonisten Donny McCaslin, dessen Band, darunter auch Lindner, von David Bowie ja für die Aufnahme seines letzten Albums engagiert wurde – und ist als Keyboarder für Angelique Kidjos Talking Heads aktiv. Außerdem hat er noch andere Projekte am Start, so wie zum Beispiel Oscillations.

The sound at the beginning of the CD will not be known to many people. We hear the opening of a cassette deck, the insertion and the starting of the cassette. But that’s all that reminds of Retro. Because Jason Lindner, mastermind and keyboarder of Now Vs.Now, is anything but backward-looking – even if he makes use of sounds that, for example, Scritti Politti unfolded in the 80s to sound mountains. Or Pink Floyd in the late 70s. The use of these sounds are rather quotes at Lindner, because the sound esthete, who already used the keys on David Bowie’s last work and especially on the majestic swan song „Blackstar“, sees himself as a renewer.
The concept of this album
He mixes electronic music with jazz, funk, soul, synth-pop and electro-R & B. That makes his music interesting, challenging and mostly even groovy – but sometimes too arbitrary. What I sometimes miss in his music are rough edges, real tensions. But that’s part of the concept of this album. More about that right now. The best piece of the album is „Dichotomy“, a work oriented on oriental harmonies, which fulfills exactly the demands for variety and breaks up the aesthetics of the sound through oblique moments. That too is exactly what you want at this point.
Lindner is an philosophical artist
What makes the album despite some weaknesses nevertheless an important work, is the concept of the philosophical artist (Lindner is just that!): With „The Buffering Cocoon“ Lindner wrote down musical ideas, if you like, it is sound essays, dealing with future issues. The themes of each track are linked together like individual chapters of a book, and their musical expression is built on each other. Thus, Lindner does not use traditional listening habits, the music is sober in a peculiar way, there are „chapters“ of terse words, there are chapters of detailed explanations, and references to other cultures and musical epochs are created. The sound of the starting cassette indicates that a music has been put together here which must be heard in one piece. You do not even start reading a book in Chapter 4!
Lindner challenges us to give up our listening habits and to rethink our way of thinking. An interesting approach!
In addition to the band Now Vs Now, which also includes bassist Panagiotis Andreou and drummer Justin Tyson, Lindner is a sound designer, composer, arranger and producer. Lindner is currently touring with saxophonist Donny McCaslin, whose band, including Lindner, has been hired by David Bowie to record his latest album – and is a keyboarder for Angelique Kidjo’s Talking Heads. In addition, he has other projects at the start, such as Oscillations.
